The Gotham Hotel has a secret past … not so secret really – and although we enjoy the Batman references – truth is, this luxury hotel is the former home of the world famous Gotham Book Mart – a literary salon that exists no more in life but in our memories and online. This place was much more than a book store, the GBM was a community that nurtured the budding careers of writers and artists, such as James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound.
Although censored, The Gotham Book Mart proudly continued to sell James Joyce’s Ulysses – the GBM stood tall in the face of diversity as selling D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterly’s Lover in the 1920’s and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer 1930’s led to lawsuits and landmark decisions on censorship.
The Gotham Hotel stands proudly on this historic site, retaining the namesake to carry on tradition to new generations and keep the spirit alive.
Gotham, the name itself alludes a mighty iconic City, each floor features original artworks celebrating historic moments and glimpses into the life and times of ye ole Gotham City!
